Barbara Ngwarraye Long’s ‘Yam Dreaming’ from Artists of Ampilatwatja, famous for its bush medicine and desert landscape depictions.
‘Within Barbaras painting of fine dot work, there is a “happy man” hidden and surrounded by bush tucker. If you look carefully, you will see him hidden, the little figure among the dots and bush yam.’
“Your see that little fella there, he’s happy because of all the bush tucker, all the bush yam” - Barbara
‘The community of Ampilatwatja made a conscious decision not to paint ‘altyerr’ dreaming stories, the artists paint their country where those stories sit.’
‘This painting shows the layered landscape of Alyawarr, Central Australia. Knowing your country is an important part of living in a remote community like Ampilatwatja. Knowing when and where to go hunting and gathering, knowing where there is ‘soakage’ (where you can dig for water), travelling with family or ceremonies, and maintaining a connection with the land.’
“This is my country, my view of country” - Barbara
